I’m gearing up to finish some major surgery I started on my 1993 Stratocaster a while ago and one of the items on my to-get list is a decent soldering iron. Below is the one I have saved on my Amazon list. What do you folks think? Got a better one in the $30-$50 range I should look at?

I have the iron you linked and it is very good for the price. I bought mine earlier this year but I used them for 4 years before that at school.

This is a little pricier, but might be worth it if you plan on doing a lot of soldering in the future https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11704

I have that one, and I don’t really like it. It takes too long to heat, and the lamp cord they used for the cords is a pain in the ass. we have Weller WSD-81s at work and I think they’re much better. Heat up almost instantly, fine temperature control, and the cords are more pliable and don’t wrap up or take a set.

Looks nice, but it’s quite a bit out of my price range.

what’s your price range?
Don’t get me wrong, the one you linked works, so if you’re only going to use it infrequently it’s fine. I do a lot of soldering (mostly at work) so I have different priorities.
especially when I’m not the one buying the equipment ;)

$50 or under. I’m pretty much just going to use it for guitar projects which are going to be few and far between.

For fun go buy the 5 dollar walmart one so you can burn your hand through the plastic handle and watch the tip melt right into the components your trying to melt. *lesson learned got me by in a tight pinch but I’m also looking for a decent rig like you linked. Good luck

I have a very nice thick scar on my right arm from trying to reach over it while holding a soldering iron in my left hand. That hurt like hell.
